Types and Sizes of BMX Tires

Tires come in a wide variety of sizes. Generally speaking, you need to pinpoint the correct wheel diameter, and from there you can choose the width based on personal prefrence...to an extent. Tire sizes are typically expressed by the wheel size x the width. So you will often see tire sizes such as 20 x 2.4", 18 x 2.0", or 20 x 1-1/8".

Let's first take a look at understanding freestyle tires. You can click here to jump down to BMX Race tires.

Freestyle Tire Sizes

Step one in finding the right tire is the wheel diameter. 20" is standard in freestyle BMX, but smaller wheel sizes are common for smaller riders (14", 16", 18") and bigger wheel sizes are available as well (22", 24", 26", and even 29"). If you're unsure, this should be provided on the side of the current tire.

Next is the width. The standard rim size for a BMX wheel is 20 x 1.75", which can accept a range of tire sizes. While this range can vary anywhere from 1.5" up to 2.5", the most common sizes are somewhere between 2.1" and 2.4".

Wider tires are becoming more popular, but once you get above a 2.3" you run the risk of it being compatible with your bike. Wide tires may not seat properly on your rim or they may be too wide and rub your frame. Aftermarket rims and frames are generally better designed for these wider tires (still not guaranteed), but complete bikes are often designed for smaller tires.

When shopping on the Dan's Comp website, you can use our filter options to narrow down the selection. Select your tire diameter, then you can either shop all widths or perhaps narrow the width options down to 2 or 3

BMX Race Tire Sizes

Step one in finding the right tire is the wheel diameter. Race tires are typically either 18", 20" or 24". Where this gets confusing is that there are multiple different 20" sizes. How does that make sense? Let's dive in.

In BMX, “20-inch wheels” are the most common — but not all 20" wheels are created equal. The term "20-inch" refers to the approximate outer diameter of the tire, but the actual rim size (BSD or ISO) can differ significantly. This is where ISO measurements come in, especially 406 mm and 451 mm, which are the two main ISO sizes associated with "20-inch" BMX wheels.

Mini, Junior, and Expert race bikes use either a 20 x 1-1/8" wheel or a 20 x 1-3/8" wheel. Both of these have an ISO of 451. These are a bit taller, so they roll a bit faster/smoother.

Some Expert XL's, Pro and larger frame sizes use either a 20 x 1.5" wheel or a 20 x 1.75" wheel. Both of these are a 406 ISO wheel size. This is a bit smaller in diameter than the 451 to provide more stability and durability for bigger riders.

Let's add to the confusion. Introducing OS20. This size uses a 451 ISO, but the width of a 406, such as 1.85".

Similarly, there are two ISO options for 24" wheels. 24 x 1.5" and 24 x 1.75" wheels have an ISO of 507, which is used on Cruisers. Mini Cruisers use 24 x 1-1/8" wheels which have an ISO of 520.
