Colony BMX Swarm Planetary Freecoaster Hub Description:

The Colony Swarm Freecoaster hub is Colony's entry into the new world of Planetary-style freecoaster hubs. Utilizing Free Night's patented design, the Swarm features a planetary clutch system that allows the benefits of both cassettes and freecoasters. When rolling forward, the hub feels just like a normal cassette. Quick engagement from the pawls gives a nice, positive feel when pedaling. But as soon as the wheel rolls backwards, the clutch system disengages the pawls and you're in freecoaster mode, with infinite slack so long as your pedal speed does not exceed the wheel speed. Once rolling forward again, you're back in cassette mode. Another benefit of this design is that axial forces are greatly reduced which permits the use of standard sized bearings, making the weight of this hub more in line with that of a cassette. Colony even includes nylon hub guards for both drive and non-drive sides to help protect your new investment.

Note: Planetary freecoasters are designed to be run dry. If disassembled do not add any grease or lubricant to the internals of this hub.

Colony BMX Swarm Planetary Freecoaster Hub (Black)
I've been riding this hub since it was first released. The stock clutch needs periodic maintenance to make sure it doesn't squeak, but some use too much oil or grease to eliminate the squeak and then it can slip. Save yourself some headaches and replace the stock clutch with the Alienation Venus 1.5 clutch. I've been running that combo for 1-1/2 years now and it works flawlessly. Love this setup. Can't imagine going back to an old-style FC hub again.

This is a fantastic hub! I started to get the squeak that everyone seems to get, but the Alienation clutch upgrade got rid of that. I've been riding this hub for 4 years now and I'll never go back to a clutch-type freecoaster.

Loved it up until maybe a month or two ago. Have owned it over a year but only been riding it maybe 8 months because I didn’t build the wheel it is laced up to for a few months until I gathered all the stuff. Somehow now it has engagement issues that aren’t solved with any of the stuff I can find on YouTube to upkeep and maintain it. Bummed because I love it. Will come back and update if I ever figure it out but at the moment I’m considering just buying a new hub. I’ve gotten all the way to the clutch piece and have her tight as hell but nothing works. Irked. Colony rocks though and I’m assuming this is user error somehow on some level because it’s my first freecoaster so maybe it’s from the earlier learning curve or something. But yeah. Thanks DC. Always providing the best service possible.

Colony BMX Swarm Planetary Freecoaster Hub (Black)
I've had the swarm hub for a while now and loving it. I hate regular freecoaster slack but this hub feels just like a cassette when pedaling forward which is exactly what I wanted. I can still use pedal pressure on some tricks but riding fakie is just like any other freecoaster for the most part. Oh and moonwalking during a line is really fun too lol.

If you like to moonwalk get this hub! Unfortunately moonwalking is not for me! Dans Comp helped me get things worked out!
