Step 2: Different Types Of Balance Bikes
There are a few different styles, sizes, and features to look for when selecting a balance bike. Check out each section below to learn more and know how to find the right size.
If you have more questions or need assistance, our customer service team is more than happy to help you find the perfect bike.
Balance bikes can either use an aluminum or a steel frame. The aluminum framed bikes are lighter and generally a bit smaller.
If a kid is just starting to walk, an aluminum frame may be a better fit due to its (slightly) smaller size and lighter weight. If the child is a bit bigger, a steel frame may work better. Steel frames often include rubber tires, which we get in to in the section below.
Our website provides a frame material filter to help you narrow down the selection if you prefer one over the other.Balance bikes also vary between the wheel and tire material. Aluminum framed bikes typically use plastic wheels and tires. These are great on the smaller balance bikes because they are light and require no maintenance.
Aluminum rims are generally found on steel framed bikes. These wheels include rubber tires which provide more grip/traction. This is great for riders that are starting to build some speed and ride a wide variety of terrain.
Balance bikes all use a 12" wheel size, however, the actual height can vary a bit depending on the wheel and tire type. As mentioned, the aluminum rims and rubber tires sit a bit taller than the plastic wheel and tire combo.
While toptube size is usually the go-to spec to find the right size, on balance bikes it's more about the frame height. Unfortunately, this isn't a spec often provided by the manufacturer. For this, we just recommend looking at the photos. The alumnum frames have a much lower, single-tube frame design. This works great for little ones just learning to walk; it's smaller and easier to get on and off.
Steel framed balance bikes use a traditional frame design with a top and a down tube. This makes the bikes ride height a bit taller.
