What type of brakes do I need for my bike?

There are two types of brakes commonly found on BMX bikes. Most street/trails frames use 990 style or U-brakes while most race frames use linear pull or V-brakes. U-brakes and V-brakes can not be used interchangeably. The location of the brake mounts in relation to the rim determines what brake is needed. If the brake bosses are mounted on top of the seat stays chances are you need V-brakes. If the brake mounts are located on top of the chainstays or on the bottom of the seat stays you probably need U-brakes.

What if my frame does not have brake mounts?

Some older frames do not come with brake mounts welded to the frame. Traditionally, these frames were designed to use caliper style brakes. If you wish to upgrade the brakes on your older frame a U-brake or V-brake plate can be used to run the corresponding brakes.

How can I make my brakes work better?

There are several different ways to improve braking performance. The first is to make sure your brakes are adjusted properly and the brake pads are making full contact with the rim. You can also increase braking performance by running a softer and larger brake pad. Keep in mind that chrome rims offer better braking performance than silver or painted rims.

What do I need to know when ordering new brake pads?

When ordering new brake pads you will need to know if you have threaded or non-threaded brake pads. Threaded brake pads are the most common and found on both U-brakes and V-brakes.
